HAMMOND | An East Chicago man died Friday night after his pickup truck collided with a semitrailer in Hammond, police said.
Eliaser Jeronimo Jr., 43, was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. Friday of blunt force trauma injuries, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
Jeronimo's 2003 Dodge Ram pickup hit a semi Friday night coming out of a parking lot on West Chicago Avenue near White Oak Avenue in Hammond, police said. The semi driver suffered minor injuries.
Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said investigators believe alcohol and Jeronimo's high rate of speed were factors in the crash. Miller said it appeared Jeronimo had been drinking.
The semi driver tested negative for alcohol and was not issued a citation for the accident.
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Hammond police Lt. Patrick Vicari, the traffic division commander, at (219) 853-6490.
