EAST CHICAGO | A 61-year-old man was stabbed 10 times Wednesday night outside his apartment by a homeless man, police said.
R. Vanderwerf, of the 500 block of West 151st Street, was taken to St. Catherine Hospital after the stabbing and later transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Vanderwerf was outside of his apartment about 10:20 p.m. when he saw a homeless man known in the neighborhood as Tony acting strange and asked him if he was OK, police said. Tony then got out a knife and stabbed him 10 times, East Chicago police Lt. Marguerite Wilder said.
Vanderwerf, who lives by himself, had stab wounds on his chest, left arm, hand and abdomen, Wilder said. There were no other reported injuries.
Officers weren't able to find Tony or the knife Wednesday night. Wilder said Tony is homeless but lives in a vacant apartment near where the stabbing took place.
Wilder said officers plan to interview Vanderwerf to get more information about how Tony looks and how police can find him.
Anyone with information about the stabbing or the suspect's whereabouts is asked to call police at (219) 391-8331.
