CROWN POINT | Lake County prosecutors on Friday filed two Class D felony charges of neglect of a dependent child against an East Chicago woman.
Dana Crawford, 22, is accused of leaving her two children, ages 3 and 2, alone in her apartment for hours Jan. 17. A downstairs neighbor heard the children screaming and crying from 5 to about 9 p.m. and went upstairs to knock on the door, a probable cause affidavit states.
The neighbor heard the children near the door, trying to get out, and called East Chicago police, court documents say. The children were taken to a police station and picked up by Child Protective Services.
After finding a note from police in the apartment at 11 p.m., Crawford arrived at the police station at 12:50 a.m. Jan. 18, and identified herself as the children’s mother, according to the documents.
She told police she had put her children to sleep at 8 p.m. Jan. 17 and went to a friend’s apartment, where she was “running her mouth” and lost track of time, documents say.
