EAST CHICAGO | A 9-year-old was bit by a pit bull Tuesday in the 3500 block of Pennsylvania Street, police said.

Police Chief Mark Becker said two pit bulls had escaped from their in closure and approached the boy, who lives in the area. The boy tried to avoid the dogs but suffered bites to both legs from at least one of the pit bulls.

When officers were called to the scene at 4:49 p.m., they learned the dogs' owner had gained control of the animals and brought them home.

The boy's condition was not known Wednesday night.

Police are investigating the attack. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the East Chicago Police Department at (219) 391-8400 or the anonymous tip line at (219) 391-8500.
