EAST CHICAGO | Police responded to a shooting near Guthrie and Deodar streets Friday night, where a man was shot multiple times and later died, East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker said.

The man died Saturday morning after being airlifted to an Illinois hospital, Becker said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office declined to release the identification of the man, pending notification of next of kin.

Becker said police received reports of a shooting about 8:30 p.m. Friday and found the wounded man in the street. Witnesses reported a man fleeing the area with a gun, Becker said.

The investigation into the slaying is ongoing, Becker said Saturday.
