EAST CHICAGO | A 16-year-old East Chicago boy died and an 18-year-old with him was hospitalized early Monday after the two were found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

East Chicago police responded to a call at 1:30 a.m. Monday about a gray Chevrolet Suburban embedded in a snowbank east of the intersection of Riley Road and Indianapolis Boulevard, police Sgt. Juan Beltran said.

Jeremiah Rivera, 16, was found outside the vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The driver, Julio Cartagena, 18, was inside the vehicle and had also been shot several times.

Rivera was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office. Cartagena was taken by helicopter to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Beltran said. His condition is unknown.

East Chicago police and Lake County crime scene technicians are investigating Rivera's death as a homicide.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call Detective Maurice Phillips or Sgt. Beltran at (219) 391-8318.
