EAST CHICAGO | While no cause has yet been determined for a fire Saturday that destroyed a string of businesses in the 500 block of West Chicago Avenue, the City Council on Monday expressed appreciation for fire departments from nearby communities that provided assistance.
"It was a big fire, and we needed a lot of help with that one," 5th District Councilman Rosendo Cuevas said.
Cuevas, a district chief for the East Chicago Fire Department, asked that the city clerk send thank-you letters to the various fire departments answering the call.
"Especially Hammond," Cuevas said. "They sent us an aerial ladder that assisted us at that fire."
Cuevas said the fire that began about 4:30 p.m. Saturday was still burning when he left the scene at 6 a.m. Sunday.
Fire Chief Emiliano Perez will give a further report on the fire at the next Board of Public Safety meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at City Hall.
