CROWN POINT | An employee at an East Chicago tire shop recalled Tuesday in Lake County Criminal Court how he thought he was retrieving a tire from a customer and instead was shot several times.
Jesus Fuentes-Lopez identified Adrian Barriga, 21, of Hammond, as the person who shot him March 11, 2013, outside the tire shop in the 4700 block of Tod Avenue in East Chicago.
"It's 5 o'clock, it's broad daylight, I didn't think I was going to get shot," Lopez said.
Barriga is on trial on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery by means of a deadly weapon charges.
Lopez said he knows Barriga but they never had problems.
Defense attorney Derrick Julkes grilled the state's witnesses about when Barriga was identified as the shooter. He said officers pushed Lopez to identify Barriga as the shooter.
East Chicago officers said Barriga's brother was initially identified by Lopez as the shooter. Lopez said it wasn't until after he got out of surgeries that he told officers the full story and named Barriga as the shooter.
The trial is scheduled to continue Wednesday morning.
