EAST CHICAGO | A 50-year-old East Chicago woman was shot to death Tuesday night.
Earnestine Tarver, of the 3900 block of Fir Street in East Chicago, was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m. in the 3900 block of Fern Street, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
Tarver was visiting the father of her children when she went into the backyard for unknown reasons and was shot four times, said police Lt. Marguerite Wilder said. Tarver had not been in the backyard for long before the shots were heard, Wilder said.
East Chicago police were dispatched to the home about 6:30 p.m. and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
"She had gone into the backyard, we don't know why," Wilder said. "Some shots were fired, and she was struck and killed."
Wilder said Tarver frequently visited the Fern Street house. She said police know she was in the backyard with someone.
Police have not identified any suspects. Wilder said detectives were talking to a few witnesses Wednesday but urged anyone with information about the homicide to call East Chicago police at (219) 391-8318.
