EAST CHICAGO | The city is reopening an emergency cooling shelter today in anticipation of predicted triple-digit temperatures.
Heritage Hall Community Center, 4506 Tod Ave., will be open from 4 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Wednesday for residents to cool off.
City Emergency Management Agency Director Herbert Cruz said that elderly people, small children, chronic invalids and people with weight and alcohol problems are particularly susceptible to heat reactions.
Cruz recommended that residents check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone, and monitor their pets frequently.
