DYER | Mathletes from the East Chicago Urban Enterprise Academy proved that “Math is the only subject that counts” at the Indiana Association of School Principal’s annual M.A.T.H. Bowl competition held Feb. 27 at Kahler Middle School.
Fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders from ECUEA competed along with six other local schools on problems in the standards of Number Sense, Computation, Data Analysis and Probability and Problem Solving, earning first place in their class as well as in the local competition overall, and the fourth- and fifth-grade team came in second in its class.
Once scores from all regional sites were compared, added Eskew, ECUEA's sixth-grade team was ranked 16th among 122 teams statewide.
"This provided great momentum and confidence for our students leading into ISTEP testing this week," said Veronica Eskew, assistant principal and math specialist at ECUEA. "All competitors demonstrated outstanding teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic ability and it was evident that the coaches and spectators were very proud of them all."
