CROWN POINT | An East Chicago man was handed an 18-month sentence Thursday on a charge of voyeurism.
Carlos Cortez, 45, was charged in March with nine counts of felony voyeurism for allegedly hiding a video camera inside an employees' restroom at a Schererville restaurant.
The camera was discovered under a sink by an employee who heard it beeping from a low battery, court records state.
In a plea deal submitted in November, Cortez admitted to a single count of voyeurism and prosecutors agreed to dismiss the remaining counts.
On Thursday, the court handed Cortez an 18-month sentence to be served in prison or a Lake County Community Corrections program if he qualifies.
Cortez also was ordered to receive mental health treatment.
