EAST CHICAGO | Mayor Anthony Copeland and the East Chicago Department of Redevelopment are providing Section 3 training to all contractors.

Because of the importance of this program, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is required by calling (219) 391-8513, ext. 261.

Training is at 5 p.m. Monday; a question-and-answer session is set for 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday. Both sessions are at 400 E. Chicago Ave., back entrance.

Each year the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development invests billions of federal dollars into distressed communities for projects designed to build and rehabilitate housing, improve roads, develop community centers and otherwise assist families achieve the American dream.

As a condition of receiving HUD Community Planning and Development assistance, recipients certify they will comply with the requirements of Section 3 annually. Accordingly, the Department of Redevelopment has the legal responsibility to monitor recipients for compliance and can impose penalties on those who fail to meet their obligations.

All work is required to meet all applicable local, state and federal codes and regulations. Minimum qualifications include: have a minimum of five years working experience as a licensed general contractor; be licensed with a city or county of competent jurisdiction within Indiana; be in good standing and current for 2013 for general contracting services; show evidence of insurance for all aspects of the business; hold a workers' compensation policy or be willing to buy one.
