EAST CHICAGO | The East Chicago Park Board has elected officers for the year.
Board member Rick Rodriguez made a motion to keep all officers the same as in 2013, and no board member opposed that motion.
Therefore, Lilia Ramos will remain as board president, Richard Gillis as vice president and Valda Lewis as secretary.
The board then proceeded with an agenda that included discussion of a contract with ServiScape LLC to perform lawn and course maintenance on the city-owned MacArthur Golf Course this year.
No representative from ServiScape was present to discuss a new contract, and no one from the company attended the meeting.
The board tabled discussion of the contract until its next meeting Tuesday.
Ramos said she is hopeful there will be no increase in the new contract.
The Park Board in May approved a contract in the amount of $114,649 with ServiScape for the 2013 season.
In other park news, Fran Nowacki, manager of recreation for the Parks Department, gave a report on Christmas events held last month.
She said 300 out of 400 city-bought gifts were distributed free to children at the annual tree-lighting ceremony. Surplus presents were given to St. Joseph's Carmelite Home in East Chicago and to a battered women's home in the city, she said.
Almost 400 East Chicago senior citizens attended a Senior Christmas Party on Dec. 11 at the East Chicago Knights of Columbus Hall, she said.
"We are looking into moving the Senior Christmas Party to Ameristar (casino) next year and have it in two sessions," Nowacki said.
She said the plan is to have two seatings of 250 people to accommodate a larger crowd.
