EAST CHICAGO | The East Chicago School Board has approved the district calendar for the 2013-14 school year.
The first day of school for students will be Aug. 12. The last day for students is scheduled for May 29.
Graduation is set for June 8, 2014.
A separate calendar was approved for Lincoln Elementary School, which operates on what is considered a balanced calendar.
The first day of school for Lincoln Elementary students will be Aug. 2, with the last day set for May 29.
Superintendent Michael Harding said the district calendar was established after much discussion with all employee groups.
One of the most significant changes in the district calendar is that the first semester will end prior to winter break, which will run from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3.
Harding said the first semester had typically run into the second week of January, meaning East Chicago Central High School students would take their final exams after the winter break.
"So this kind of emulates what happens in college," Harding said.
In other district news, Harding invited the public to attend four community meetings that will be held this month to explore options that may be considered regarding the possible restructuring of enrollment across the district.
The meetings will be June 11 at Block Middle School, June 13 at McKinley Elementary School, June 18 at Carrie Gosch Elementary School and June 20 at Lincoln Elementary School. All meetings will start at 6:30 p.m.
"There will be opportunity for public comment," Board President Jesse Gomez said.
