EAST CHICAGO | Leaders of the East Chicago School Board say the district is searching for an assistant superintendent.
The district has been without an assistant superintendent since former assistant Dawn Greene resigned from that job in August 2010.
East Chicago School Board President Jesse Gomez said the position was posted last week. He said an assistant superintendent also would be responsible for secondary education in the district.
He said the district also posted the position for a director of elementary education.
Meanwhile, veteran school administrator William "Bill" Gall's position as the district's interim superintendent is coming to a close. Gomez said Gall, an Educational Service Co. consultant, has served in an interim capacity while East Chicago Superintendent Mike Harding is on family medical leave. Harding has been on Family Medical Leave since July 5. Gall began his duties July 8, working a few days a week as needed.
"We have not had any contact from Mr. Harding," Gomez said. "Our attorney will approach Mr. Harding to determine his status. Mr. Gall's contract with the district ends in mid-September. I'm not sure if he will still be available if we need him for a longer period of time."
In December 2012, the previous board of trustees unanimously approved a motion not to extend Harding's employment contract beyond his termination date of August 2014. Harding became superintendent in August 2009.
Gomez said when Harding took Family Medical Leave, the board was just beginning the process of creating a protocol to evaluate Harding's performance as superintendent.
"The previous board gave him notice that his contract would be up in August 2014," Gomez said. "The current board will make sure that all of the proper notices were given. But we're still a long way from that. The board was just at the stage of formulating the evaluation process. We know that he did not agree with the processes from the previous board. We were going to talk about putting something in place."
Gomez said the new nine-member board has some concerns that will be addressed during the evaluation.
"There is nothing we can do now while he's on Family Medical Leave," Gomez said.
