EAST CHICAGO | A Gary resident out on bond for a felony weapons charge ran from a police interview over the weekend, leaving behind drugs, his drivers license and $685 cash, police said.
Officers were called Saturday afternoon to the 1100 block of West 150th Street by a resident who said she wanted a man removed from her apartment.
Mardell Morgan, 21, of the 2800 block of West 77th Place, became nervous when officers asked him to step outside of the residence, according to their reports.
A pat-down search revealed suspected cocaine, ecstasy and the currency, police said.
After the discovery, Morgan pulled away from the officers, leaving them holding his jacket with keys, cellphone and drivers license, and fled into the neighborhood, police said.
Morgan was free on $40,000 bond facing a Nov. 28 hearing before Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Boswell on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon after he was found to be carrying a stolen .40-caliber handgun and marijuana in a February downtown East Chicago traffic stop.
At the time, Morgan was on probation for 2009 convictions in Lake Superior Court on robbery and possession of cocaine charges, both felonies, and his probation was revoked.
The Ruger handgun found in his car, loaded with six hollow-point and six full-metal-jacketed rounds, was reported stolen out of Noblesville, Ind., in 2001, police said.
