EAST CHICAGO | A fire at a two-story apartment building on Columbus Drive late Tuesday displaced seven people, an official said.

The East Chicago Fire Department responded at 10:32 p.m. to the six-unit building at 2320 E. Columbus Ave. and extinguished the flames within an hour, fire investigator Dennis Fanno said.

The person who lived in the unit where the fire started was not home at the time, he said.

Five other adults and one child were displaced from other apartments. The child was not home at the time of the fire, Fanno said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said. No injuries were reported.

The second-floor unit where the blaze started sustained fire, smoke and water damage. The unit below it sustained significant water damage.

Three additional apartments sustained smoke damage, Fanno said.
