EAST CHICAGO | The ECIER Foundation partnered with The Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana Gerald I. Lamkin Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center of Ivy Tech Community College for the Young Innovators Video Challenge competition, a new activity for the center’s 10th anniversary celebration.
The inspiring theme for the video challenge was “What’s Your Idea?” which was launched to inspire the next generation of thinkers to solve problems in fresh new ways. The competition challenged high school students to take a creative approach to solving problems and to demonstrate how they would implement solutions through a creative, 90-second video.
The projects were judged by a selection committee with one winner from each category, and five students received recognition. The ultimate goal of the competition was to inspire life lessons and to encourage young people to become lifelong leaders and innovators.
Ka’Lesa Dalton, a junior at West Side Leadership Academy, and Anita Flowers of Wirt Emerson Visual and Performing Arts Academy, were among the winners. Ni’Avia Wilson, a senior at Wirt Emerson, was a finalist. All three are student representatives of the ECIER Foundation.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors for ECIER Foundation, we are so proud of our young ladies,” said Chareice White, founder and president. “We teach and empower students to step out of their comfort zones and dare to be different, while providing lifechanging experiences and opportunities for our youth.”
One such opportunity was a meet and greet with famed NBA basketball player and entrepreneur Earvin” Magic” Johnson during his recent visit to Gary.
Next, the foundation will host a red carpet movie premiere fundraiser for those 18 and older featuring “Think Like a Man Too” along with a gourmet buffet meal and celebrity appearances, at 3 p.m. June 21, at AMC Showplace in Hobart.
The donation is $65; call (219) 663-9715 by the Sunday deadline.
