CROWN POINT | A 24-year-old man admitted Tuesday to being the driver in a fatal hit-and-run, according to court records.
Rolando M. Leal Jr., of Gary, pleaded guilty to failure to stop after an accident resulting in death and intimidation, according to the plea agreement.
Leal was driving a gray Buick Roadmaster near the intersection of 140th and Deal streets when he hit Brigido Lopez Jr., of East Chicago, according to the plea agreement. Leal did not stay at the crash scene.
Lopez, 47, died at 11:30 p.m. June 1 at the scene, according to the Lake County coroner's office. He died from blunt force trauma.
East Chicago police found Lopez after receiving reports of gunshots heard in the area and a man possibly running away from someone. Lopez did not have gunshot wounds.
The intimidation charge stems from when officers tried to arrest Leal. According to the plea agreement, he said profanities at the officer and told the officer he was in charge of the streets.
Leal is expected to serve four years in the Lake County Community Correction Kimbrough Work Program followed by two years on probation, according to the agreement.
He will be sentenced July 2.
