EAST CHICAGO | September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the East Chicago Public Library wants to make sure that all children in East Chicago have the smartest card of all – a library card.

Public library programs and books make a difference in the lives of students. By providing school-age children with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds will become excited and enthusiastic readers.

In honor of Library Card Sign-up Month, during the week of September 17 to 22, East Chicago Public Library patrons who have lost their library cards can replace it FREE of charge. Normally, replacement cards cost $5 for adults and $1 for children. In order to receive a free replacement library card, you must bring in proof of East Chicago residency or your East Chicago school identification. In addition, your record must be fine free with no overdue materials.

Ongoing programs at the East Chicago Public Library include: Preschool Story Hour, Craft Day, Game Day, Story time, Computer Day, Movies, Family Library Cinema, Night at the Movies, Class Visits, Cultural Programs and many other programs.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” says Interim Library Director Mr. Charles Moore. “In tough economic times, your library card gives you free access to books and computers, homework help, assistance with resumes and job search, music, movies and much more. Best of all, it won’t cost you a thing – it’s all free with a library card.”

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important card to have in your pocket.

For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit the East Chicago Public Library Main Branch located at 2401 E. Columbus Drive or the Pastrick Branch located at 1008 W. Chicago Avenue, call (219) 397-2453 or 397-5505 or visit the library online at www.ecpl.org.
