HAMMOND | Purdue University Calumet is administering a $60,921 collaboration grant awarded by the Foundations of East Chicago to encourage northwest Indiana's African-American middle school students to obtain a college education.

Officially, the grant has been awarded to the African American Student Achievement Council, but a portion of the funding will be used in support of the African American Student Achievement Conference on Feb. 8 at PUC.

The conference will bring together committed community leaders intent on helping students in grades 7 to9 from East Chicago, Hammond and Gary better understand what it takes and how to apply themselves to earn a college or university degree.

The conference also features a “Reality University” component designed to provide students a better understanding of the tools and preparation they will need to obtain a college education.

Through grant support the African American Student Achievement Council will advance other higher education awareness-related activities for the students.

“The Foundations of East Chicago is proud to have been a financial partner with this initiative for the past three years,” Foundations of East Chicago Director of Programming Tyrone Spann said.

Since 2010, the African American Student Achievement Council has facilitated collaborative efforts of PUC and its Educational Talent Search Program, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana, and Communities in Schools-East Chicago to support college success and attainment among northwest Indiana African-American students.

Other information can be obtained at www.RUreadynwi.org or by phoning PUC at (219) 989-2370 or (800) HI-PURDUE, ext. 2370.
