EAST CHICAGO | Six people remained in custody Monday after being arrested on suspicion of drug possession last weekend in four separate incidents.
Officers responding to a complaint of drug use Sunday found a cloud of marijuana smoke in the hallway outside an apartment in the 4900 block of Tod Avenue, police said.
After allegedly viewing cannabis in plain sight inside, officers arrested Christopher Wright, 22, of Gary, and Jonathan Rodriguez, 29, of Calumet City, on possession charges.
The renter of the apartment, Karen Rodriguez, 21, also was taken into custody for investigation, police said.
In another incident, Kevin Sledge, 28, was arrested Friday after police said he refused to quiet down when officers were called to a loud dispute outside an apartment in the 4400 block of Olcott Avenue, police said. Sledge was found to be carrying marijuana, police said.
Earlier that day, a Hammond man was arrested buying a vanilla blunt at a Roxana gas station in the 1400 block of Carroll Street when an officer inside the business reported smelling a strong odor of fresh marijuana, police said. Wayne Rushing, 18, was arrested after he was found to be carrying eight plastic bags containing suspected cannabis, police said.
In the fourth incident, a bag of suspected marijuana and $890 were found in the possession of a Merrillville woman after a routine seat belt stop revealed that she was driving without ever having been issued a license, police said. Diana Robledo, 22, was pulled over in the 4000 block of Deodar Street, police said. A clear plastic bag containing the suspected cannabis was in plain view on the front seat of her vehicle, police said.
None of those arrested had been charged as of Monday afternoon.
