CROWN POINT | An Illinois man was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in prison after admitting molesting a 12-year-old girl while visiting a friend in East Chicago.
Prosecutors dismissed two charges of rape against 19-year-old Dominique Devon Hayes in exchange for Hayes pleading guilty to child molesting.
Hayes, of Riverdale, had been guest at the home of a family friend on Nov. 29, 2011, when he entered the room where the child was sleeping.
The girl's mother told authorities Hayes was at the family's home until 10:30 p.m., when she thought he had left, court records state.
The girl told her mother she awoke at about 12:45 a.m. to find Hayes assaulting her, according to court records.
