EAST CHICAGO | Patrons can wipe their slate clean of overdue fines this month by contributing to the Easy Chicago Public Library’s annual food drive at at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive, and the Pastrick Branch Library, 1008 W. Chicago Ave. Canned goods and other nonperishable food items will be accepted as payment for fines through Dec. 30. Items collected will be donated to a food pantry to help brighten the holidays for needy area residents. One food item, which cannot have an expired date, must be turned in for each overdue book. The offer does not apply to items checked out from the Audio-Visual Department. Fees for lost or damaged materials will not be forgiven.  Interim Library Director Charles Moore hopes this activity will encourage patrons to return overdue items. It also is an opportunity for the library to share the spirit of the holiday season with others in the community. For additional information, call (219) 397-2453.
