CROWN POINT | Prosecutors on Wednesday charged an East Chicago man with murder, accusing him of fatally shooting another East Chicago man last weekend.
Witnesses told police Tavares Berry, 37, fired at Frank Currie multiple times during a struggle about 8:34 p.m. Friday in the 3400 block of Guthrie Street. Currie, 50, suffered five gunshot wounds and was airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital, where he died Saturday.
Berry and Currie were observed struggling in an area where children were present, court records state.
Berry fired once at Currie when Currie no longer could hold onto his arm, then several more times as Currie fell into the street, according to court records.
After shooting Currie, Berry continued firing into the crowd as he fled the scene, court records state.
Before the shooting, Berry was observed walking with another man in the area. That man also drew a gun and pointed it toward the crowd as he pursued a third man, according to court records.
