EAST CHICAGO | A 19-year-old man was charged Monday with gunning down a 16-year-old boy earlier this year, police said.

Lamario E. Delgado-Gonzalez was charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in bodily injury, said Lt. Marguerite Wilder, of the East Chicago Police Department.

Delgado-Gonzalez was not in police custody as of Monday night. Wilder said witnesses identified him as the shooter.

The shooting happened about 1:30 a.m. Feb. 17 near the intersection of Riley Road and Indianapolis Boulevard, police said. Officers at the scene found a Chevrolet Suburban embedded in a nearby snowbank.

Jeremiah Rivera, 16, of East Chicago, was found on the ground nearby. He died from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

The driver, an 18-year-old man, was found inside the vehicle. He was bleeding from his face and had been shot several times, police said. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

It was still unclear Monday what led to the shooting.
