EAST CHICAGO | A 32-year-old East Chicago man died late Wednesday night after being shot in the face there, officials said.
Sammy Flores, of the 500 block of West 143rd Avenue, was pronounced dead at 10:42 p.m. at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, a Lake County coroner's report said.
The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound suffered in a homicide at the Luke Oil gas station at 5695 Indianapolis Blvd.
East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker said Flores was a customer at the gas station and was shot in the face. The motive was not immediately known, but Becker said it did not appear to involve a robbery.
Police were searching for a green SUV on Wednesday night. Becker said the gas station had surveillance video officers are reviewing and were locating witnesses and a possible suspect in the case.
