EAST CHICAGO | A 23-year-old East Chicago man was shot there late Wednesday night and died shortly thereafter in a local emergency room.
Carlos Velez III, of the 4400 block of Baring Avenue, was pronounced dead at 11:14 p.m. in the emergency room at St. Catherine Hospital, according to the Lake County coroner's office.
The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds. The death was ruled a homicide.
The coroner's office said the shooting occurred outside at East 139th and Butternut streets.
Officers were called to the area about 10:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found Velez lying in the street, said East Chicago Deputy Police Chief John Verbich.
Police initially reported no witnesses to the crime, but Verbich said Thursday morning that detectives are following up on leads in the case.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crime to call (219) 391-8318.
