EAST CHICAGO | The East Chicago Human Rights Commission in conjunction with The East Chicago Public Library held a Disabilities Awareness Month event where Mayor Anthony Copeland sat and read to 5th grade Children at the East Chicago Public Library located at 2401 E. Columbus Drive. There was a full house of eager students listening to the Mayor read a book titled "Susan Laughs".
Told in rhyme, this story follows Susan through a series of familiar activities. She swims with her father, works hard in school, plays with her friends -- and even rides a horse. Lively, thoughtfully drawn illustrations reveal a portrait of a busy, happy little girl with whom younger readers will identify. Not until the end of the story is it revealed that Susan uses a wheelchair.
Mayor Copeland stated, " You didn't realizes Susan was in a wheel chair until the end of the story. Sometimes we let other distractions get in the way of knowing a person for who they really are or we listen to others opinions of somebody instead of getting know the person for yourself. It is important to remember, we are all created equal and we should treat each other as such".
The event concluded with a reading of a proclamation proclaiming March as Disability Awareness Month and a tour of a disability awareness exhibit in the library's East Chicago Room.
