EAST CHICAGO | A missing 17-year-old Valparaiso boy was hospitalized Friday after allegedly trying to set a seat on a South Shore commuter train on fire.

Robert Byrd, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Transit Police chief, said officers responded at 9:50 a.m. to westbound Train No. 14 after passengers told a conductor someone was trying to set a seat on fire.

Transit officers found the teen aboard the train, which was stopped at the East Chicago station, and took him into custody.

Byrd said the teen appeared to be impaired and was transported to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he was admitted for observation.

Charges were pending with the Lake County Prosecutor's office Friday afternoon, Byrd said.

The incident delayed the train by about 20 minutes.
