EAST CHICAGO | The City Council has approved the 2014 budget, a spending plan City Controller Kim Anderson said contains all funds balanced without the use of gaming subsidies.

The 2014 general fund budget approved is approximately $24.4 million, a decrease of about $1.5 million compared to the previous year.

Sixth District Councilwoman Gilda Orange said she is glad to see a balanced budget that allows casino money to be used for street repairs.

Council Vice President Christine Vasquez said cooperation from department heads who took part in many committee meetings made adopting a budget an easier process.

"It's a shared sacrifice, but they worked with us and it went smooth this year," Vasquez said.

The council also approved the 2014 sanitary budget with a general fund of about $7.5 million.

Anderson said there is about a $200,000 reduction in the overall 2014 sanitary budget due to workforce downsizing.
