Two sets of shootings in East Chicago, one early Sunday morning and another late Saturday night, left one man dead and four others wounded.
Glenn Patterson, also known as Glenn Spates, 34, of the 3800 block of Euclid Avenue, was shot in the face and found dead at his home after police responded to a report of a shooting there at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, according to East Chicago police.
Patterson was declared dead at the scene by the Lake County coroner's officials at 3:35 a.m.
Another man who was a victim in the same shooting, was located nearby in the 3900 block of Drummond Street. Police found Geray C. Campbell, 34, of East Chicago, had been shot in the hand and hip. He was taken to a nearby hospital.
Two and a half hours earlier police had responded to a separate report of a shooting in the 3900 block of Drummond Street and found two gunshot victims at the scene.
Ronnie Riley, 21, of East Chicago, had been shot in the stomach and was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. Robert Billington, 22, of Chicago, was grazed by a bullet and treated at the same hospital and then released.
A short time later, police found a third victim of that shooting, Austin Earl Williams, 24, of Gary, who was being treated at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary. Williams had been shot multiple times, including in the leg. Police were told conflicting stories about how Williams was shot and later arrived at the hospital, but now believe he was shot in the 3900 block of Drummond and then taken by associates to the Gary hospital.
East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker said police are trying to determine if there was a common denominator to the two sets of shootings in the same area just two and a half hours apart. But so far none has been found.
"Right now we are taking them as two separate events and addressing them as that," Becker said.
