EAST CHICAGO | An 8-month-old Calumet area boy was hospitalized in serious condition Thursday and his father arrested after he was accused of beating him, police said.

The infant's mother said she left the child in his father's care while she went to the beach Thursday afternoon and called police after she returned to the man's residence in the 4700 block of McCook Avenue and saw her son's condition.

Local emergency room physicians had the boy transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment of head and neck injuries, including bruises and swelling to both eyes, police said.

The child's father told police the boy had fallen out of bed, but the infant's mother said the 20-year-old man had admitting beating the infant because "all he did was cry."

The boy remained in the South Bend hospital Friday afternoon, police said. Charges are pending against the father.
