EAST CHICAGO | Two men with a load of metal stolen from a Chicago construction site were followed to East Chicago and arrested Thursday, police said.
An off-duty Chicago police officer watched the men load bundles of iron rebar into their pickup truck at 131st Street and Torrence Avenue in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood, where a railroad overpass is being built, police said.
The officer followed them into Indiana but lost sight of the truck in East Chicago, police said.
East Chicago officers spotted a white pickup matching the description of the fleeing vehicle in the 400 block of East Chicago Avenue and pulled it over, police said.
The Chicago officer arrived and identified the men as those he saw taking the metal, police said. There were bundles of rebar in plain sight in the back of the truck, police said.
Tony Wayne Currie, 52, of East Chicago, and David Thomas Jr., 58, of Harvey, were detained for Chicago police on suspicion of theft.
