For the second year, the Lake County Kool Smiles dental offices are participating in Operation Troop Treats, asking children to bring in their collected Halloween candy to be sent in care packages to the troops serving overseas via Operation Gratitude.

In exchange, children can have their choice of a toy.

In 2012, more than a ton of candy was donated by children for the troops at Kool Smiles offices nationwide, with 34 pounds of that collected from the three Kool Smiles offices in Lake County.

Children can bring their candy during office hours from Friday through Wednesday to the following locations: 1313 W. Chicago Ave., East Chicago; 1021 W. 5th Ave., Gary; and 8327 Indianapolis Blvd., Highland.

Each child will receive one toy for every 25 pieces of unopened candy in its original intended packaging.

The program is open to everyone, regardless of whether they are patients of Kool Smiles. There is a limit of three toys per child and toys will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
