CROWN POINT | Lake County prosecutors filed three criminal charges Wednesday against an East Chicago man in a purse-snatching incident Jan. 19 that left two people injured.
Drakkar Malik Boyd, 18, faces one count of robbery resulting in bodily injury, a Class B felony; a Class A misdemeanor charge of battery resulting in bodily injury and one Class B misdemeanor count of battery.
Boyd is accused of grabbing a woman’s purse as she walked toward the entrance of Fuertes Meat Market at 1820 Broadway in East Chicago. The court documents state the woman screamed for help and Boyd struck her several times with his closed fist, wrenched the purse away from her and ran north on Broadway.
A co-owner of the meat market heard her scream and witnessed the struggle, the probable cause affidavit says. The man ran to help and wrested the purse away from Boyd, who hit the man in the face with a closed fist, according to the document.
Boyd dropped his cellphone during the incident, which the co-owner of the meat market turned over to police, the affidavit states.
Both the woman and the market’s co-owner positively identified Boyd from a photo.
Boyd was arrested by East Chicago police.
