EAST CHICAGO | The American Red Cross found shelter for 13 residents of an apartment building in East Chicago after a fire there Saturday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Roberto Martinez said firefighters were called mid-afternoon to the building in the 3800 block of Deodor Street.

Martinez said the fire was contained to one unit in the four-unit building but heat and smoke damage to the other units made them all uninhabitable.

One resident was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. Martinez said the woman's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The American Red Cross is assisting the 10 adults and three children displaced by the fire, Martinez said.
