EAST CHICAGO | A 17-year-old East Chicago boy was shot and killed in the city late Monday, marking the second homicide in Lake County in 2014.
Darion Glover, of the 3600 block of Main Street in East Chicago, was shot and killed in the 3500 block of Guthrie Street, said a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office.
Glover was pronounced dead at 11:33 p.m. The cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds suffered in a homicide.
The Lake County coroner's office identified the teen as Darion Glover. However, East Chicago High School Principal Lydia Jagger said the teen was identified on school records as Garrion Glover.
Jagger said Glover was a senior at the high school. She said counselors were available Tuesday for students who were friends with the slain teen.
East Chicago Police Chief Mark Becker said police were still piecing together the details of what led to the shooting. He said officers weren't getting much cooperation from the community.
Police did not release Tuesday any other details about the shooting.
Glover was the second person shot and killed in the region Monday and marked the second homicide of 2014 in Lake County.
Tyrece Harris, 18, of Gary, was found shot to death at 1:20 p.m. in a car in the 4900 block of Eighth Avenue in Gary.
Local law enforcement officials and the coroner's office last week reported dramatic drops in crime in January and early February, crediting the frigid temperatures and frequent snowstorms with keeping violent crime and homicides down.
