EAST CHICAGO | Two longtime city department leaders have announced they will retire within the next few weeks.
John Artis, executive director of the Redevelopment Department, will retire effective June 1, and Fire Chief John Edwards will retire around the same date.
Artis began his career with the Redevelopment Department in 1973. He served as director of housing and redevelopment from 1978 until housing and redevelopment became separate entities in 2008, and he continued as redevelopment director.
Edwards, a city firefighter of 26 years, served as district chief for 12 years before replacing former Fire Chief Pedro Rodriguez, who retired in May 2011.
Officials said the city would advertise for a new redevelopment director, and Mayor Anthony Copeland would choose the new fire chief.
