EAST CHICAGO | We Care From The Heart will be participating in the 2014 Point In Time Homeless Count and is looking for volunteers to assist with the count in East Chicago from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The headquarters for the East Chicago count will be at the We Care From The Heart office located at the Pennsylvania Community Center, 3550 Pennsylvania Ave.
The Point In Time (PIT) Count is a U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department mandate that provides the region with reliable estimates of homelessness in the area. Agencies across the county will undertake a community-wide effort to collect information on the number and characteristics of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
It has been said and thought that the City of East Chicago does not have a homeless population, however, as community service providers, We Care From The Heart bewlieves this to be untrue.
An accurate count of homelessness enables social service agencies to plan, collaborate, and implement effective services that help alleviate and, ultimately, bring an end to homelessness.
Volunteers will actively assist in the process for counting homeless individuals and families on the street. As they meet unsheltered individuals, they will provide them with a bag of basic essentials to help them as they attempt survival outdoors. Along with donated items will be information about area services and agencies.
Those who can assist are asked to call the office at (219) 933-7111 and provide the time frame they can help out or items they can donate.
