CROWN POINT | A Gary man is accused of raping a teacher who gave him a ride home from a gas station in the city over the weekend.

Darius Lamar Buchanan, 32, is charged with rape, criminal deviate conduct and two counts of criminal confinement, court records show.

On July 12, Buchanan approached a woman leaving a gas station in Gary, called out to her by name and asked for a ride home, records show.

As a schoolteacher, she was not alarmed and assumed the person knew her from her school and was possibly a former student, she told police.

The woman drove Buchanan to his home in the 4400 block of Maryland Street. She was forced her into the home by gunpoint, records state.

Buchanan raped her inside the home and allowed her to then leave, after which she called police, according to records. Buchanan's bail was set at $140,000 on Monday in Lake County Court.
