GARY | Ball State University has set appeal hearing dates for two Gary charter schools that were notified their charters would not be renewed.
LEAD College Preparatory Charter School's hearing is set for April 3. A hearing for Charter School of the Dunes is slated for April 24.
According to the process, the request for reconsideration is made to the Ball State University Charter Schools Hearing Panel, consisting of three people appointed by the university president, or his or her designee, and shall not be previously involved in the decision to issue the notice of intent to not renew. A hearing officer, who is a nonvoting member of the panel, will be appointed.
Ball State officials said the decision not to renew was based on a careful review of academic, financial and organizational performance and compliance.
The two Gary charter schools were among seven across the state that were not renewed. Their contracts expire June 30.
West Gary Lighthouse Charter School withdrew its application for renewal, and also will close in June. The Lighthouse Academies have decided to restructure, consolidating three high schools into one building serving nearly 700 students. That proposal is before Ball State University's Office of Charter Schools.
