GARY | Authorities arrested 29 people Friday in a sweep of Gary, police said.
Officers also found 5 kilograms of cocaine in a vehicle stopped on Interstate 80/94 between Burr and Grant streets, police said. The seizure remains under investigation and police were not releasing the name of the suspect Sunday night, sheriff's spokeswoman Patti Van Til said.
Police targeted high-crime areas during the sweep, stopping vehicles, talking to people and conducting warrant checks, Van Til said.
People were arrested on charges ranging from possession of marijuana and heroin to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a news release issued late Saturday by the Sheriff's Department.
Th department conducted the sweep with help from Indiana State Police and officers from Gary, East Chicago, Indiana University Northwest, Munster, Griffith, Highland, Dyer, Whiting, Lake Station, Porter County and the Region STOP Team.
Sheriff John Buncich said the sweeps will continue this spring and summer.
“The combined efforts of the various police agencies are making a difference with this number of arrests,” Buncich said in the release.
