INDIANAPOLIS | Women from Gary and Merrillville were honored Friday with Indiana's highest award for senior citizen volunteerism.
Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman presented the Golden Hoosier Award to Anne Thompson, of Gary, and Amanda Wilson, of Merrillville, at an Indianapolis ceremony.
Thompson was honored for eight years of volunteering and fundraising for the Drexel Foundation for Education in Gary.
Wilson was recognized for her work running Faith Ministries, which sends visitors to region nursing homes and senior centers.
Skillman said the women are a fine example of "showing us what it means to be a genuine friend and neighbor."
