GARY | Police teamed up with local churches and hosted a gun buyback program that took 129 firearms off the city's streets in one day, officials said.
Guns could be dropped off at churches on Saturday in exchange for Wal-Mart gift cards, Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram said.
“We ran out of money before we even really got started,” he said.
Information was collected from people who didn't receive gift cards so they could receive the compensation at a later date, city officials said.
Ingram said he was surprised by the large response from the community. He thought they would only receive about 50 turn-ins.
Prior to the buyback on Saturday, Gary Police had taken more than 150 guns off the street since the first of the year, Ingram said. He hopes the city will be able to host another buyback soon.
