Several businesses have recently stepped up with generous gifts to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana.
Horizon Bank is donating $20,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana to help support its “Making the Grade” educational program.
“Making the Grade” is a basic skills program designed to develop and discover the challenges of youth in education and strengthen basic educational skills.
Horizon Bank supported this program in 2012 and has returned as a benefactor after seeing positive results.
Making the Grade is a 10-week program for youth 9 to 15, spending one week on each subject and covering all basic needs of the students in the program.
Also, by close evaluation in these sessions and close contact with parents, professional staff discovers weaknesses in certain subjects and relay all findings - whether positive or negative - to the parents and, in some cases to the schools, thus giving the parents the opportunity to assist in their child “Making the Grade.”
Also for the second year, Miller-Coors, along with Strack & Van Til, partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana to distribute meals to families in need throughout Lake County. This year, MillerCoors generously provided holiday meals for more than 800 Lake County families.
“MillerCoors employees were exceptional in volunteering their time and efforts in distributing meals to families in need this year with in our community,” said Lincoln D. Ellis, president and CEO for Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana.
Employees of MillerCoors worked with Jeff Strack from Stack & Van Til distributing meals at six club site locations Dec. 19. The families received a ham, stuffing, gravy, vegetables, and a pie.
“We are grateful for this contribution this year and look forward to working with Miller-Coors in the future,” Ellis said. “Without their support, we literally would have club members who would not have a family meal to share for the holidays at all.”
For 19 years, Peoples Bank has provided a holiday season to remember for hundreds of Boys & Girls Clubs’ members with funds raised by bank employees hosting fun events.
“Peoples Bank employees are very creative in raising funds for our organization,” Ellis said. Employees hosted football and basketball pools, offered casual dress days, and held bingo games.
Each event is sponsored by a bank department, such as the loan, marketing or trust departments. Each dollar raised by employees is matched by the bank.
This year, $10,000 was raised by employees. What is unique about Peoples Bank giving is that in addition to a toy, each club member also is given a new winter coat, gloves, hats, and clothing. This year, 60 club members were given lasting memories through the generosity of Peoples Bank and its employees.
In addition to sponsoring youth during the holidays, Peoples Bank also sponsors the Money Matters program which teaches financial responsibility to teen club members, and requests employees to volunteer their time by presenting the program at club sites.
