A 5-year-old Chicago Heights boy under water for about 10 minutes was airlifted from a Gary hospital to Chicago after being rescued from Lake Michigan on Thursday, officials said.

The boy had been out with a group at West Beach when he went missing, according to a Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore news release.

Lifeguards immediately began searching for him on air and water and found him about 20 yards into the lake 10 minutes after initiating the search.

Emergency medical care was administered to the boy and he was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary by Portage Fire Department and then airlifted to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago.
