GARY | A Gary police officer involved in a shooting at his home Tuesday night has been reassigned to desk duty as the investigation into the incident continues, Police Chief Wade Ingram said Wednesday.

The shooting occurred about 9:15 a.m. in the 700 block of Randolph Street in the city's Miller neighborhood, Ingram said.

"It did involve a Gary police officer," Ingram said.

The shooting was not fatal. Ingram said there were "some injuries involved" to the officer himself.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department is investigating the case. Spokeswoman Patti Van Til confirmed the matter is under investigation but declined to release any specifics involving the case, referring all questions to Ingram.

"The internal affairs division has been notified, and there is a parallel internal investigation taking place," Ingram said. "The officer has been assigned to administrative duties, at least for now."

Ingram said he could not provide more specific information regarding the officer's tenure or role on the force, citing concerns for the officer's rights during the internal investigation.
