GARY | Bring the family to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Nature Play Zone this Saturday for a nature fort building challenge.

Using natural and other materials found in the Nature Play Zone, children can try to build the sturdiest, longest, or best-looking fort. Winning builders will earn a small prize.

The contest is in celebration of the 37th anniversary of the Paul H. Douglas Center, 100 N. Lake St. in the Miller neighborhood, where the Nature Play Zone is located. Space is limited. To participate, call (219) 395-1821.

More than 1,000 children have used the Nature Play Zone since it opened in April as a place where kids can safely engage in unstructured play in a natural setting.

While supplies last, families using the play zone will receive a free nature exploration backpack to continue exploring nature at home.

Enjoy the Nature Play Zone and Douglas Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call the park’s information desk at (219) 395-1882 or visit
